Rosine, Kentucky, isn’t just a spot on the map; it’s the sacred ground where Bill Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass," was born and raised. From the rolling hills of Jerusalem Ridge to the echoes in Uncle Pen’s Cabin, this town is where the "high lonesome sound" first reached up and pulled music out of thin air.
This past January saw lots of excitement in Rosine as we embarked on the “Lonesome Sound Of A Fiddle Project”.
Making the Video: "Lonesome Sound of a Fiddle"
My original idea for the song was to write one that told the story of Bill Monroe’s Mom and Dad courting down on the banks of the river under the watchful eye of Uncle Penn. As the song progressed, it took a turn and became a legend of its own. Staying true to the setting of Jerusalem Ridge and incorporating the Lonesome Fiddle to honor Uncle Pen, we ended up with a murder ballad. In January, as we waited for the snowstorm, the excitement began to build. I had recently brought Sandy Shortridge in as duet partner, and now I was bringing that tradition back home to film the music video for the new single, "Lonesome Sound of a Fiddle".
The single is now at Radio, and the video is available to view on Youtube and Facebook. The track is a "heartbreak murder ballad" designed to capture the raw, roots-driven energy of the area.
The filming took place right here in Rosine, utilizing the historic Home Place and atmosphere that can only be found in the birthplace of the genre.
The Setting: Scenes were captured around the iconic landmarks at the Monroe Homeplace in Ohio County, ensuring the "roots-music sound" remained authentic to its origins.
The Actors: Local Actors from the Ohio County Court Jesters Theater, Dilyn Aud, and Max Swift were used to play the parts.
The Music: Featuring signature twin fiddles and haunting vocals, the video mirrors the lonesome spirit of the legends who once played these very barns.
A Local Tribute: Filming in Rosine pays homage to the legacy of Uncle Pen Vandiver and Bill Monroe, keeping the spirit of the Rosine Barn Jamboree alive for a new generation.
