An incredibly influential pillar of the roots and old-time music scene since the late 1970s, Rob’s dedication to the craft is matched only by his generosity toward those trying to learn it.

I first crossed paths with Rob back in 1994 at the historic Official Kentucky State Championship contest, then held at the Rough River Dam State Resort Park. Even in a crowd of formidable characters and immense talents, Rob stood out immediately. He wore a signature hat proudly adorned with a large turkey feather, carrying himself with an air of approachable mystery. But when he struck his first chord, any mystery dissolved into pure awe. Whether holding down an rock-solid driving rhythm or taking center stage with blistering flatpicked runs, Rob played some of the absolute best lead and rhythm guitar you could find anywhere—bar none.

Yet, what truly elevates Rob from a great musician to one of the definitive artists of our time isn't just his technical mastery. It is his heart.

Over the thirty-two years since that first meeting, I have watched Rob consistently pull focus away from his own accolades to lift up others. He is a master who is always eager to assist the youngest generations of musicians. In a festival culture that can sometimes feel intimidating to a beginner, Rob has spent decades pulling chairs up for kids, slowing down tempos, and guiding small hands through tricky progressions. He has spent a lifetime helping aspiring artists experience magical breakthrough moments on their instruments—core memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

As the seasons change, Rob continues to tirelessly spread the joy of roots music wherever he goes. This past weekend proved to be no exception.

While wandering through the crowds at the Twin Lakes National Fiddler Championship on the courthouse square in downtown Leitchfield, Kentucky, a familiar turkey feather caught my eye. Amidst the noise, vendors, and fierce instrumental competitions, we ran right into Rob. Taking advantage of the serendipitous moment, we cornered him for an exclusive catch-up interview.
